Martinický Palace, Hradčanské náměstí 8/67, 118 01 Prague 1 - Hradčany
DESCRIPTION
The Martinický Palace from 1541 was built on the right side of Hradčanské náměstí and on the site of four Gothic burgher houses. It is one of the most beautiful late renaissance monuments in Prague. The palace was owned by Ondřej Teyfl of Kinsdorf and Zeilberk and it did not become Martinický until 1583. Already at this time, the building was raised by one floor, the north wing was added and the main facade was decorated with a red marble slab with the coat of arms of the Martinics. Although the palace received a partially early Baroque appearance, the front sgraffito decoration with biblical and mythological scenes restores its renaissance face. This was further emphasized by the reconstruction carried out between 1967 and 1973 and subsequently also in the 1990s. The large hall is richly decorated and is followed by a chapel with an original ceiling painting which is decorated on the outside with frescoes from the 16th century based on a design by Albrecht Dürer.
